The 2017-2018 club racing season is off and running
April 22, 2017
The Western Pennsylvania Slot Car Club returned to action Saturday night at Ragged Edge Raceway in Mars, PA.
An open practice session was followed by pre-race technical inspection, driver’s meeting and voting for the best appearing racecar. After the preliminaries were out of the way and food and drink were making the rounds the racing program started in earnest.
It was another three-card event featuring Stock T-jet vintage Le Mans sports cars, Super Stock T-jets, and AFX MT/XT vintage Le Mans sports cars.
As always congratulations to the race winners and podium finishers, and a thank you to everyone for attending and making it an enjoyable evening of slot car racing.

The first club race meet in the New Year brought us to a new venue, Paul Allen’s Black Max. This track was the old Uncle Bob’s Raceway that many of the club members raced on at the old “Asylum” racing facility in Mars, PA.
Paul has significantly upgraded the table, wiring and monitors and added a few new sections to the circuit. The track scenery is outstanding the circuit itself fun to drive. And most significantly Paul was an excellent host.
It was an all G-Jet event featuring three classes: full-width hard body G-Jets (Le Mans Group C sports cars for this season), Lexan bodied G-Jets featuring Le Mans sports cars for this half of the season, and hard body Formula G-Jets. Once again the G-Jets were smooth, handled well, evenly matched and fun to drive and race.
Congratulations to the race winners and podium finishers, and to everyone attending for making it another fun slot car evening.

The club kicked off the new racing season with a fun get-together at Ragged Edge Raceway. The members thank Ralph and his wife Bette for again being outstanding hosts.
It was an all G-Jet event featuring three classes: full-width hard body G-Jets (Le Mans Group C sports cars for this season), Lexan bodied G-Jets featuring NASCAR stock cars cars for this race, and hard body Formula G-Jets. As always the G-Jets were smooth, handled well, and were evenly matched; a true driver’s slot car class.
In a change of format, the first race was run in the standard round robin format and acted as a qualifier of sorts, seeding three “mains” for the second race. The finishing order of the second race then seeded the mains for the third and final race. There were no move-ups and a racer could win or place high overall from any main. The format allowed individual matches with four racers, and it was a lot of fun.
Congratulations to the race winners and podium finishers, and to everyone attending for making it another fun slot car evening.

Sixteen racers made their way to Treesdale Motorplex on a pleasant Saturday evening for the final club race of the season.
An open practice session was followed by pre-race technical inspection, driver’s meeting and voting for the best appearing race car. After the preliminaries were out of the way and food and drink were making the rounds the racing program started in earnest.
Three pancake motor classes were featured on two road courses; stock T-jet Vintage Trans Am on the Brad Bowman 4×8 known as Treesdale Farms Raceway, followed by Fray-style super stock T-jets and AFX MT/XT Vintage Trans Am on the original Aurora ‘tub track’ with a modern TKO manufactured racing surface.
As always congratulations to the race winners and podium finishers, and a thank you to everyone for attending and making it an enjoyable evening of slot car racing.

Trackside Action
April 2, 2016
Saturday night April 2nd the members of the Western Pennsylvania Slot Car Club found their way to the home of Ralph and Bette Spithaler. The club would like to thank Ralph and Bette for welcoming the group into their home for a fast and exciting night of slot car action.
Before the racing started the first event was the concours voting for the best appearing race car. Jeff Little, in his beautifully painted Monza GT, won easily with more than 50% of the available votes. Congrats Jeff, it is a great looking car.
Three G-jet classes were on tap for the evening as drivers found themselves liking the speed and grip of the 4′ x 13′ TKO raceway. The hard body IMSA class has found itself be dominated by the AFX Monza GT bodies, as 9 of the 11 participants chose to field one. The hard bodies provided lots of good fender banging action, but when it was all over Jeff Lauterbach found himself on top of the podium with 158.21 laps. Tom Lauterbach was second with 156.17 laps and Ralph Spithaler third with 153.26 laps.
Lexan bodied G-jets were up next on the track. The lighter weight bodies proved to be a bit faster than their heavier counterparts in the previous race. This time it was Tom Lauterbach taking top honors with a 165.15 tally in the closely contested race. Jeff Lauterbach pulled in second with a 164.29 total, and Ralph Spithaler on the final step with 163.40 laps. An interesting observation showed less than a 2 lap difference per 3 minute heat between the hard body and the Lexan body classes. Also, five drivers cracked the 4 second mark in this race.
The hard body Formula class was the final event of the evening and nobody was able to displace Tom Lauterbach, Jeff Lauterbach or Ralph Spithaler from the podium steps on this night. Tom collected the trophy by little more than half a lap at the end with a 165.32 total edging out Jeff with 165.03 laps. Ralph recorded 162.28 laps, claiming 3rd in all three races.
Once again, thank you Bette and Ralph for allowing us into your home for an evening of slot car racing fun and fellowship. Thanks to everyone for coming out to race. A good group makes for a fun enjoyable night. Thanks again, and hopefully see you all again at the next race.

Action at the track
March 19, 2016
The WPSCC would like to thank Greg Kurnal and his wife for hosting the evening’s racing event. As always, the food was plentiful and so was the on-track action.
To start off the evening’s activities, nine drivers made the call for some IROC Coupe action. The four ‘clip-on’ coupe bodies, made by Tom Bowman of BRP, were mounted on AFX/AW-type chassis prepared and provided by Jeff Little. The Coupes were raced on Greg’s’ 4×8 Brad Bowman built oval that Greg recently acquired from John Bamonte. Greg, along with some help, has called in a landscaping outfit to add some character to the former ‘Old Orchard Speedway’.
The racing was fast and a few drivers found themselves exiting the track over the wall between turns 3 & 4, usually with a little nudge from their fellow competitors. Ralph Spithaler set a fast pace early in the 90 second heats scoring 50+ laps in each of his first three segments, in large part by avoiding all the mishaps. What was looking to be a thrashing of the field was stemmed by the gremlins in the white lane as the wrecks found him. In the end though, he was able to hold on with a nine lap advantage over second place Tom Lauterbach, with Greg Kurnal just two laps back in third.
Action moved to the Cherry Valley Raceway road course for the remaining races with three-minute heats for all classes. Stock T-jets with Trans Am bodies were first on-track. Tom Lauterbach set the pace with nearly 69 laps. Tom was followed closely by his son Jeff Lauterbach, with Ralph Spithaler taking the third spot.
Super Stock T-jets found the familiar duo of Tom and Jeff Lauterbach taking the top spots, with Greg Kurnal bumping Jeff Little off the podium by sections as both drivers had 88 laps.
AFX/AW Trans Am completed the night’s racing. Jeff Lauterbach claimed the top of the podium in a race decided by sections, as he and Greg Kurnal tied with 98 laps. Tom Lauterbach claimed third in the contest.
Thank you to all the drivers for coming out to race. Congrats to the winners, and to Jeff Little for garnering most votes in the best appearing race car competition.

Saturday brought another enjoyable evening of fellowship and G-Jet racing to the Western Pennsylvania Slot Car Club. The members thank Jeff Little and his wife for hosting. Jeff has put together a fine slot car race room. The racing circuit was the Green Fray Tribute built by Scott Dunlap of California. This track and table is a replica of the Green track at the classic T-jet race known as The Fray in Ferndale.
It was an all G-Jet event featuring three classes: full-width hard body G-Jets (Aurora AFX “IMSA” sports cars for this season), Lexan bodied G-Jets featuring Trans Am cars for this race, and hard body Formula G-Jets. As always with G-Jets the racing was close all through the field. The cars were a challenge to drive on the twisty and flowing Green Fray, especially the full-width hard body class; the toughest of the three classes in terms of handling.
Congratulations to the race winners and podium finishers, and to everyone attending for making it another fun slot car evening.

The Western Pennsylvania Slot Car Club held its second oval racing event of the season on the Evans City Speedway oval. Fourteen drivers turned out to take part in the action. Thank you Jeff Albitz for coming out to race with us. It was nice to see you again, and we hope you had an enjoyable evening. On the card for the evening’s racing were Stock T-jets with Vintage NASCAR bodies, Hot Rods and Dune Buggies on the Indy T-jet chassis, and the AFX MT/XT class featuring Fairgrounds bodies. The Best Appearing Race Car voting was claimed by the car of Eric Shuck.
The action started off with the Stock T-jet NASCAR division taking on the fast, 4-lane, 4′ x 16′ oval. After 12 minutes of racing, Tom Lauterbach found the top podium spot with 180 laps 22 sections. Tom was followed by Ralph Spithaler with 175-23 total, with Greg Kurnal close behind at 174-19.
Hot Rod – Dune Buggy class with the Indy T-jet chassis took the call to action next. Once again Tom Lauterbach showed the way with a lap total of 196-24. Jeff Lauterbach claim second trailing by two laps with a 194-25 tally, and Ralph Spithaler taking the final podium spot a 191-07 count.
The night of racing was capped off with the fast running AFX MT/XT equipped Fairgrounds type cars. Tom Lauterbach completed the ‘hat trick’ garnering the top spot on the podium with a 263-02 total, chased by Jeff Lauterbach 257-05, and Greg Kurnal 247-07 claiming the final step.
We would like to thank Ralph and Bette for their always generous hospitality. Thanks also to the club members for coming out to race.

The Western Pennsylvania Slot Car Club enjoyed a fun G-Jet race night on Saturday. Good fellowship, good food, and close racing. Greg Kurnal is an outstanding host, and his race room is an ideal hangout for the slot car enthusiast.
The racing was close all through the event, something you come to expect with the G-Jet. It really comes down to the driver. It was an all G-Jet event featuring three classes: full-width hard body G-Jets (Aurora AFX “IMSA” sports cars for this season), Lexan bodied G-Jets featuring Trans Am cars for this race, and hard body Formula G-Jets.
Congratulations to the race winners and podium finishers, and to everyone attending for making it another fun slot car evening.

A field of ten racers turned out for an evening of slot car racing. Jay and Michelle McKain hosted the Western PA Slot Car Club event on their Black Fray Tribute track. With only ten racers in the house we decided to run only four of the six lanes to avoid possible marshaling problems.
The event classes featured were; Stock T-jets – Trans Am, Super Stock T-jets, and AFX/AW – Trans Am. After running 3 minute heats in all divisions, Tom L. took the top spot in the Stock T-jet class with a 63 lap 29 section total. Jeff L. followed him closely with 62-30 for second, and Ralph S. with a 61-15 lap count for third.
Super Stock T-jets found a flip of the top two with Jeff L. garnering the win with an 85 lap 30 section total. Tom L. claimed second 85-02, and Don B. holding down the third spot with an 83-24 total.
AFX/AW Magna-Traction class saw Tom L. grab his second victory of the evening 85 laps 15 section with Jeff L. 83-38 chasing him for second, and Don B. 80-28 once again taking the final podium position.
Interesting observation: the winning lap totals for the Super Stock T-jet and AFX/AW Magna-Traction classes were both at 85 laps.
Jeff L. took the top vote for best appearing race car, and Jay also supplied a few door prizes based on the Super Stock finish.
Thanks Jay and Michelle for hosting the night of racing, and thanks to all that came out to race.

It was oval night for the WPSCC Saturday night at Evans City Speedway. The three event card of racing action featured Stock T-jets Fairgrounds, Indy T-jets, and AFX/AW Magna-traction Vintage NASCAR.
Fifteen drivers were on hand to take part in the program. A nice field of cars were presented for the “best appearing race car” voting which found the a tie between the Fairgrounds T-jet of Eric Shuck and the AFX/AW NASCAR of Ben Hill, with three votes each.
Dave Funyak brought along John D’Alesio as a guest to check out the club and participate in the action. Thanks for coming John and hope to see you again at future events.
Thanks to Ralph and Bette for hosting again. Your hospitality is always appreciated. Thanks to the members for coming out and supporting the event. Congratulations to all the podium finishers.
Merry Christmas to everyone and have a safe and happy holiday season!
See you all next year!

The club enjoyed a three class, all pancake motor race event on Saturday at Ragged Edge Raceway in Evans City, Pennsylvania. Featured were Stock T-jet Vintage Le Mans Sports Cars, Fray-style Super Stock T-jets and AFX MT/XT Vintage Can Am Sports Cars.
It was a fun evening of HO slot car racing. Ralph and Bette are always wonderful hosts. The AFX class was as popular as ever with the group, and once again provided a good driving and good handling bang for the buck.
As always congratulations to the race winners and podium finishers, and a thank you to everyone for attending and making it an enjoyable evening of slot car racing.

The Western Pennsylvania Slot Car Club enjoyed a fine evening of slot car racing and fellowship on Saturday at Treesdale Motorplex.
It was an all G-Jet event featuring three classes: full-width hard body G-Jets (Aurora AFX “IMSA” sports cars for this season), Lexan bodied G-Jets featuring Le Mans sports cars for this race, and hard body Formula G-Jets.
The group closely watched the lap times for all the classes, and the parity of these cars is amazing. It truly is a driver’s slot car class.
This was the first outing for the so-called IMSA class sports cars, an excellent opportunity to mate vintage Aurora bodies to the contemporary G-Jet platform. The cars were well received as a racing class by the club members.
Congratulations to the race winners and podium finishers, and to everyone attending for making it another fun slot car evening.

The club kicked-off a new racing season Saturday evening at Roger Pfab’s Meridian Raceway. Roger is a great host and as always his TKO road course is nothing but pure pleasure – smooth, winding and fast.
It was an all pancake motor night featuring stock and super stock T-jets and AFX Magna-Tractions and XTs. Vintage Le Mans Sports Cars was the featured body class.
As always congratulations to the race winners and podium finishers, and a thank you to everyone for attending and making it an enjoyable evening of slot car racing. Everyone agreed it was nice to get-together again and back on the track after the club summer break.

The WPSCC 2014-2015 season has drawn to a close. Greg Kurnal hosted the club’s final race on his challenging TKO track. Eleven racers made the call to green for the night’s activities that featured three T-jet divisions. Stock T-jets, Indy T-jets, and Super Stock T-jets took to the track with Tom and Jeff Lauterbach showing the way, claiming the top two spots in all three classes. Tom picked up the wins in the Stock and Indy divisions, with Jeff collecting the win in the Super Stocks.
As the WPSCC season closes, I would like to thank all the club track owners for opening their homes and hosting this bunch of slot-heads throughout the year. All of you have given us a place to enjoy ourselves with some fine tracks and places to race. Your hospitality and kindness is greatly appreciated. I would also like to thank the members of the WPSCC. Without the combination of owners and members we would not be able to enjoy the hobby the way we do. Thanks again, and have a great summer.

It was another fun, friendly and competitive evening of racing and fellowship in the Western Pennsylvania Slot Car Club. The venue was Treesdale Motorplex, and the BSRT G-Jet continues to provide close and challenging racing right out of the pit box.
Three G-Jet classes were run on two different tracks. Lexan bodied G-Jets, featuring NASCAR for this race, and hard body Formula G-Jets were run on Pine Creek Raceway (original Aurora tub track with TKO routed racing surface). Full-width hard body G-Jets, featuring Ford GT40s for the season, zipped around Treesdale Farms Raceway (4×8 Brad Bowman routed track).
Congratulations to the race winners and podium finishers, and to everyone attending for making it another fun slot car evening.

Saturday was G-Jet night in the Western Pennsylvania Slot Car Club. Although we counted our lowest attendance of the season it turned out to be a very good night of racing.
A unique marshaling format was introduced by Ralph and worked quite well, and interestingly enough served to highlight the most challenging sections of the track.
Three G-Jet classes were run: full-width hard body G-Jets (Ford GT40s for the season), Lexan bodied G-Jets featuring Trans Am for this race, and hard body Formula G-Jets.
The club extends a big thank you to Jay and Michelle for their outstanding hospitality. Congratulations to the race winners and podium finishers, and to everyone attending for making it another fun slot car evening.

Saturday night the Western Pennsylvania Slot Car Club enjoyed an Oval Racing Special Event on the club owned Evans City Speedway, a 4×16 foot, four lane, routed oval track built by Scott Dunlap of California.
First up was a bit of business with an early discussion regarding the racing format for next season, new member voting, and a bite to eat. Next was a special drawing for a great looking fairgrounds stock car body prepared, detailed and donated by Ron Sklenar. Ron is a noted Aurora collector and modeler in our area who does an excellent job with these cars. A thank you to Ron and congratulations to our host Ralph Spithaler who won the drawing.
The best appearing race car competition was a runaway with John Bamonte’s Auto World Studebaker Hawk, also detailed by Ron Sklenar with a striking lime green color, added roll and nerf bars, and other fine detailing.
Then it was down to the racing features for the evening. Three classes were run on the big oval: Stock T-jet fairgrounds stock cars, AFX NASCAR stock cars, and IROC Tyco 440-X2s NASCAR stock cars. The IROC cars were prepared and provided by Dave Funyak and they were a lot of fun to drive on the oval. A big thank you goes out to Dave. Overall the racing was as good as ever, with an all-oval event a welcome variation to the regular road racing.
As always congratulations to the race winners and podium finishers, and a thank you to everyone for attending and making it an enjoyable winter evening of slot car racing.

Saturday was G-Jet night in the Western Pennsylvania Slot Car Club. The venue was Jeff Little’s Green Fray Tribute built by Scott Dunlap. Jeff is an outstanding host, and the racing and fellowship were as good as ever.
The BSRT G-Jet platform continues to grow in popularity in our club. The cars are smooth and quick, low maintenance and race well right out of the pit box, and provide a high level of parity thus making it a true drivers class.
This season the club is running three G-Jet classes: Lexan bodied G-Jets with three distinct body classes (Le Mans sports cars for Saturday’s race), hard body Formula G-Jets, and full-width hard body G-Jets (Ford GT40s for the season).
The club extends a big thank you to Jeff and Marge for their outstanding hospitality. Congratulations to the race winners and podium finishers, and to everyone attending for making it another fun slot car evening.

The New Year brought a fun club race night with an outstanding turnout, nice looking cars, and good slot car racing. Ralph Spithaler’s Ragged Edge Raceway was the venue, and the club thanks Ralph and Bette for hosting on short notice.
It was an all T-jet three-class event, featuring an alternate body class for the Indy T-jet chassis – Aurora-style Hot Rods or Dune Buggies. These cars turned out to be a lot of fun and the group really got into picking out and preparing the bodies, and racing them of course.
As always congratulations to the race winners and podium finishers, and a thank you to everyone for attending and making it an enjoyable winter evening of slot car racing.

It was a great night of slot car racing for our first club outing at Greg Kurnal’s place and the Blue TKO. It was a relaxing setting on the lake, and the race room was a fun place to hang for the evening. The foosball coffee table was a big hit! Greg has the Blue TKO track running smooth, and it looks great in the room. And of course the racing and fellowship were as good as ever.
It was G-Jet night and the three-class format featured NASCAR Lexan G-Jets, hard body Formula G-Jets, and full-width hard body G-Jets. The third class is new for this season, and for the season the club elected to run the Tomy/AFX Ford GT40 hard body.
The club extends a big thank you to Greg and Linda for their outstanding hospitality. Congratulations to the race winners and podium finishers, and to everyone attending for making it another fun slot car evening.

Goodnight ………
November 22, 2014
The Western Pennsylvania Slot Car Club enjoyed a pre-Thanksgiving race meet on Saturday at Treesdale Motorplex. The 20 RSVPs quickly whittled down to 14 racers, but it was another great night of fellowship and slot car racing.
It was an all T-jet three-class event featuring Stock T-jet Vintage Le Mans Sports Cars, Indy T-jets, and Fray-style Super Stock T-jets. With two tracks on tap for the evening the group split for the first two races. It was fun and saved a good bit of time. The group came back together for the Super Stock T-jet race to complete the race features for the evening.
A few of the members with less distances to drive hung around to shoot the breeze, and decided on a final race before calling it an evening.
Congratulations to the race winners and podium finishers, and a special thank you to Margie Bamonte for the delicious dinner. A final thank you to everyone for attending and making it an enjoyable fall evening of slot car racing.

Happy Thanksgiving!
November 8, 2014
It was a great night for racing with the Western Pennsylvania Slot Car Club. It may have been chilly outside, but the action was hot inside on the “Black Fray Tribute” track.
Stock T-jet Vintage NASCAR saw close competition with the top three tied at 85 laps and the win going to Roger Pfab over Pete Thomas and Kevin Stevenson.
Super Stock T-jets were next in another close battle with Don Berbel taking the win over Greg Kurnal followed by Jay McKain.
The AFX Magna-Traction Vintage NASCAR race was captured by Jeff King in another tightly contested battle, with Kevin Stevenson edging out Dave Funyak for the second spot on the podium.
Our host Jay McKain had a special prize for “Top Dog”. This went to the driver that had the best overall combined finish for the three classes. Dave Funyak won it with a third and two fourth place finishes.
Thank you Jay and Michelle McKain for hosting the race, with a special thank you to Michelle for the excellent food and Jeff King for running the show. A final thank you to everyone for attending and making it an enjoyable evening of slot car racing.

The club enjoyed an excellent fall evening slot car get-together at Ragged Edge Raceway in Evans City, PA. The racing and fellowship were as good as ever.
It was G-Jet night and the new three-class format featured Trans Am Lexan G-Jets, hard body Formula G-Jets, and full-width hard body G-Jets. The third class is new for this season, and for the season the club elected to run the Tomy/AFX Ford GT40 hard body.
Congratulations to our host Ralph Spithaler on his race wins, and to everyone attending for making it another fun slot car evening.

A fine evening of slot car racing and fellowship capped off what has been a banner season for the Western Pennsylvania Slot Car Club.
This truly has been a breakout season for the club. The club has experienced increased and consistent race attendance, new members, new racing venues, an expansion of oval racing, and the addition of BSRT G-Jet racing.
It was an all T-jet event with three classes run on the Aurora tub track/TKO and Brad Bowman road courses: Stock T-jet Vintage Le Mans Sports Cars, Indy T-jets, and Fray-style Super Stock T-jets.
A big thank you goes out to Jeff King for making the very cool club themed cake to commemorate the end of a fine season. Definitely check out the photos.
Congratulations to Ralph Spithaler for his win in the Best Appearing Race Car Competition with his self-detailed Indy Roadster cast by Jeff King. Congratulations also to the race winners and podium finishers, and to all the club members for making it another fun slot car get-together.

G-Jet Series
The final G-Jet series race of the club season was also the inaugural club event at Jeff Little’s place. Jeff is the new owner of the Green Fray Tribute, built by Scott Dunlap and recently moved from “The Asylum” in Mars. The standard two-class format featured Le Mans Sports Cars Lexan G-Jets and hard-body Formula G-Jets.
It was truly a fun evening of slot car racing. Jeff was an excellent host, the track was in top shape, the racing was competitive, and the conversation was as good as ever. We again thank Jeff for his hospitality.

It was a fun evening of HO slot car racing at Roger Pfab’s Meridian Raceway. The group was in a racy mood, with good on-track competition throughout the event. The cars in all three classes were able to stretch their legs on Roger’s smooth, flowing and quick TKO circuit.
Congratulations to Jeff Little for his first win in the Best Appearing Race Car Competition with his self-detailed Aurora AFX Sunoco Camaro.
Three pancake motor classes were featured on the Meridian Raceway road course: Trans Am Stock T-jets, Fray-style Super Stock T-jets, and Trans Am AFX Magna-Tractions.
A big thank you once again to Roger for his hospitality. Congratulations to the race winners and podium finishers, and to all the club members for making it another fun slot car get-together.

Dual at the Creek
April 5, 2014
The second annual “Dual at the Creek” was a fantastic time. We wish to thank our hosts Dave and Sara Jordan and our friends from Kentucky and West Virginia for making it another fun slot car get-together. As always there was plenty of good fellowship and a spirit of friendly on-track competition.
The weekend kicked-off with a Friday evening practice session. It was good to see Greg and Cletus from Kentucky, along with our host Dave, and have a chance to relax and shoot the breeze. Dave had his Aurora tub track, with original lock and joiner track, in excellent condition. It is a real treat to have an opportunity to run T-jets on this track.
Saturday brought a morning practice session, followed by a very nice pre-lunch/pre-race prayer by Chris Louisos and an outstanding lunchtime meal prepared by Sara Jordan and her friend Bonnie.
The racing kicked off after lunch, and the stock T-jet race on the tub track was one of the best slot car races I have participated in. The speed was incredible, and that along with the technical challenge of the six-lane lock and joiner track left everyone a bit drained by the end. The Tuffy class was also a tough one (no pun intended) and whoever suggested four-minute heats should be certified.
It was an outstanding slot car weekend at Cross Creek, and we are already looking forward to the next one. Thank you Dave!
